The muted sounds of clinking glassware and the murmurs of other guests failed to intrude on Angie’s wonder at the evening. She was settled into a cozy booth with a hot guy in a restaurant that didn’t feature a super-sized meal on the menu. It was like being in heaven.

Last night, she’d wreaked havoc on Rebecca’s walk-in closet. She’d decided to heed the advice given by fashion mavens for decades and had selected a black chiffon dress with clean lines, hemline just below the knee and a v-neck, not too plunging, of course.

But she’d wanted—no, needed—to add her own personality whether the results were appropriate or not. Today, her first item of business was shopping.

At four o’clock she’d raced from the library and headed downtown where she indulged herself by purchasing three-inch red strappy heels and a garnet pendant with matching chandelier earrings. Classy, but with a little zing she couldn’t resist. One side of her hair was secured with a clip, leaving the other side in a fall of curls.

Whit was sitting in the bar when she arrived. She heaved a sigh of relief. Despite his apparent eagerness for the date, she still hadn’t quite believed it until she actually saw him waiting for her. Suddenly, the night seemed full of promise.

He joined her at the entry. “Rebecca, you look great.”

“Am I late?” She was surprised to find her heart beating faster. It was only dinner, after all. And it wasn’t like she was unaccustomed to being around men. Quite the opposite. It was this man, at this time, in this place. Overall, a potent combination.

“Not at all. I just didn’t want to waste a moment of our date.” He took her arm and they followed the hostess to their booth

After the waiter delivered drinks, she said, “You didn’t have to say that.”

“Excuse me?” He looked puzzled.

“I’m not the type of woman who needs compliments all the time.”

He took her hand and covered it with his. “Who did this to you?”

“My turn to say ‘excuse me?’” She could get lost in his clear blue eyes.

“Who made you think you didn’t deserve compliments?”

“I—”

“It doesn’t matter. This is what you need to know about me. One, I don’t play mind games. Two, I say what I mean.” He lifted her hand to his lips and pressed a kiss into her palm. “Three, you look absolutely beautiful and I feel lucky you agreed to have dinner with me. Do I make myself clear?”

Angie felt like her heart stopped, only to resume pounding so hard she was sure Whit could hear it. The heat from his touch shot up her arm and spread throughout her body, leaving little shocks in its wake. She couldn’t say anything because she was pretty sure it was bad form to cry on a first date.

Emotions warred with good sense and she lifted her hand to his cheek, caressing the sculptured angle down to his lips. Whit’s eyes closed for a split second at her touch.

“I’ll take that as a ‘yes.
